Callaway Driver Comparison: Big Bertha vs. X2 Hot
Golf Club Tested. Club: Callaway X2 Hot Driver Loft Setting: 10.5° Face Setting: Draw Bias Shaft: Aldila Tour Blue Flex: Stiff It’s been a while since I’ve reviewed any Callaway equipment, the last time being when I was on the equipment testing team at Golf Monthly.
- I read a ton of reviews online and went for the X2 Hot driver. Got the package from Callaway and was VERY impressed. Looks brand new. Hits like it's in beast mode. Easy to adjust (watch the YouTube video where the Callaway pro shows how to adjust the Big Bertha and it'll work for the X2 Hot). Fantastic price. Fantastic driver.
- Where the original X Hot just offered the ability to adjust the face angle, the X2 Hot goes further, offering the same adjustability as the. Three heads of 9.5, 10.5 and 13.5 degrees are available and golfers can use the Advanced Adjustable Hosel to increase the loft by 1 or 2 degrees or decrease the loft by 1 degree.
- Every model since X2 Hot/Pro uses the same double cog adapter, including the new 2016 models. The 2016 line has a new adapter design, and while it looks different it still works in previous models. Only the tip of the adapter was redesigned to eliminate the cap that was prone to coming off.
With Callaway releasing two different model lines with their drivers this year, how do you know which one fits your swing? We’ll take a look at the major differences between the two clubs and help you make an accurate selection to benefit your game.
Big Bertha
What Players Are Looking For:
- Higher handicap players interested in this driver struggle with ball flight consistency (i.e. fight a hook or slice) and are looking for a club to combat their issue.
- Lower handicap players interested in this driver are looking for a highly adjustable club with the feel and consistency of a traditional driver.
What the Big Bertha is All About:
The biggest and most noticeable attribute to the Callaway Big Bertha driver is the Adjustable Perimeter Weighting. The APW allows players to adjust for a draw bias or a fade bias ball flight by maneuvering the weight across the back end of the club. The adjustments create a total of 16 yards of ball flight movement (8 yards left or 8 yards right). Another interesting factor is the clubhead weight, which is 199 grams. This is similar in weight to clubheads that do not have the added adjustable attributes. This is important because Callaway is able to redistribute weight low and back in the clubhead, which gives the Big Bertha a high MOI clubhead. That technical jargon just means it is extremely forgiving! The Big Bertha also promotes a mid launch angle and mid spin rate which fits into a wider array of golfers with various swing styles. Lastly, the Big Bertha comes stock with Tour authentic shafts (Fubuki Z Tour, Fubuki Zeta Tour and Aldila Tour Blue & Green) meaning no added costs when upgrading for exotic shafts!
X2 Hot
What Players Are Looking For:
- Higher handicap players interested in this driver are looking for a golf club that is easy to hit and just as easy to adjust.
- Lower handicap players interested in this driver are looking for a consistent, forgiving, long distance driver.
What the X2 Hot is All About:
The Callaway X2 Hot driver has an enhanced Variable Face Thickness behind the clubface. This enhancement refers to the exact positioning of the VFT. Typically the VFT is placed horizontally across the clubface from heel to toe. In the X2 Hot, the VFT starts at the center of the club face and moves upward and towards the toe of the golf club. Research has concluded that most misses on the face of a driver occur in this area, meaning the X2 Hot is geared toward the player with inconsistent strikes. The adjustable hosel has been redesigned and easier to use than in prior models. The hosel adjusts for loft and lie, while the loft can be affected by -1, +1 or +2 degrees with additional draw bias settings. This driver also has Tour authentic stock option shafts (Aldila Tour Blue & Green).
Hopefully if you were stuck between these two models and wondering what the differences were, you now have some insight into which model might be better suited to you!
